Diane Rodríguez is the first transsexual to run for a seat in the National Assembly of Ecuador (the legislative body of Ecuador’s government).
She is a leader of the ‘Silhouette X’ Association and represents District 3 of Guayas. However she will appear on the ballot under her male name, the name that appears on her cédula (id card).
The President of the Ecuadorian Episcopal Conference, Monseñor Antonio Arregui has “demanded” that “certain candidates” (notably the controversial evangelist Nelson Zavala) respect the LGBT community while maintaining the Catholic Church’s traditional stance that “homosexuality is an act of immorality”.
“Vote for Diane, the trans… She is a fighter, keep her in your mind…”, is part of the first verse of a song composed and recorded by her friend Maité Trejo, a transexual who has appeared in a number of reality television shows.
Presidential and parliamentary elections will be held in Ecuador on 17 February and 7 April 2013, the latter being used for a run-off if necessary.
